Does Zach Lahn live in Iowa full time?
“Full-time Iowan” is not a legal classification. We looked at whether the public record supports the claim that Lahn lives in Iowa only part time—not whether he meets Iowa's legal residency requirement or how he would perform as governor.
Lahn says he and his wife are full-time Iowans and that Belle Plaine is their home. The record supports genuine Iowa ties: He grew up here, owns his family farm and says he moved back in 2023.
But his Kansas ties are not minor. Part of his blended family lives there, and he travels regularly between Iowa and Wichita under a parenting arrangement. He also remains listed as president and treasurer of Wonder, the Kansas school he helped establish.
An older tax filing covering the year ending in June 2020 reported that Lahn worked an average of 50 hours a week for Wonder. That figure does not establish his workload today. But the school's latest filing, covering the year ending in June 2025, still lists him as president and treasurer. It also shows Wonder owing Lahn and his wife approximately $4.5 million.
That debt gives the Lahns a substantial financial interest in the school. It does not prove how much time Lahn currently spends running it, but Wonder is not simply something he left behind.
Lahn also spent much of his adult life outside Iowa. He attended college and worked in politics in Colorado, worked for Americans for Prosperity in Montana and later helped establish Wonder in Wichita. Kansas voting records show he voted there in the 2018, 2020 and 2022 election cycles. He registered to vote in Iowa in October 2024.
Public flight records show frequent aircraft travel between Iowa and Kansas. But those records track an airplane—not Lahn or its passengers—and cannot tell us where he personally spends every night.
Having children in another state is not disqualifying, and traveling to be with them is not something that deserves criticism. The relevant question is whether Lahn's continuing responsibilities in Kansas could compete with the demands of serving as governor.
The governor's job does not always follow a schedule. Floods, tornadoes and other emergencies can require attention without warning. Public records cannot tell us how Lahn would respond. They can only help voters judge his assurance that his Kansas responsibilities would not interfere with the job.
What Lahn says
Lahn says he and his wife live in Iowa full time. During a July appearance on Iowa PBS, he said the family's parenting arrangement would have “no effect” on his ability to govern.
“I’ve been very clear on that,” Lahn said. “He knows that we are full-time Iowans. He knows that my wife and I live in Iowa, and he knows we have a blended family, and we have a parenting agreement.”
Bottom line: The claim goes too far if it is presented as settled fact. Public records do not prove that Lahn lives outside Iowa or would be a part-time governor. But the concern did not come out of nowhere. His family, financial and organizational ties to Kansas are substantial and ongoing. Lahn says they would not interfere with the job. Voters have to decide whether that answer is enough.

- The latest available filing, covering the fiscal year ending in June 2025 and filed in May 2026, continued to identify Lahn as president and treasurer and reported no compensation for him.
- That filing showed Wonder owing Zach and Annie Lahn approximately $4.52 million — roughly $2.26 million apiece.
- The debt establishes a continuing financial interest. It does not establish his present daily responsibilities or how many hours he currently works there.
